Why use SLC’s OET Placement Test?

SLC was the first accredited OET preparation provider in the UK and Europe. We work with hundreds of candidates every year, preparing them to achieve their best score in OET Test. We know how important it is for candidates to know their current level, so they and their employers can:

  • See where their strengths and weaknesses are
  • Create a study plan so they can achieve the score they need
  • Accurately predict the score they will achieve in an official Test

Approved by OET

The SLC OET Placement Test has been approved by OET as part of our Premium Preparation Provider accreditation. It assesses candidates’ ability to understand and use a combination of Medical, Exam and General English. It is not a mock OET test, as candidates are not familiar with the test’s formats and question types and so would in all likelihood underperform as a result.

Four parts

The OET Placement Test consists of four parts, Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. The Reading, Listening and Writing papers are taken online. Reading and Listening are machine-marked, while the Writing is marked by a trained English teacher and examiner. The Speaking test is conducted online in real time, also with a trained teacher and examiner, taking 10-15 minutes to do.

What the results show

Each paper is marked with a grade based on the Common European Framework of Reference, so B1, B2 and so on. We differentiate into low-, mid-, and high- levels within these grades as they are very broad and this gives candidates and their employers a much more accurate picture of a candidate’s English level. A typical result might be Listening mid-B2, Reading mid-B2, Writing low-B2 and Speaking high-B2, for example.

The test has been used widely by nurses and doctors wanting to achieve a Grade B in OET. Our ongoing analysis of the results and the consequent training programmes show that it represents an accurate picture of a candidate’s language profile and their training needs.

The test therefore enables an organisation to understand how much training is needed for a candidate – or group of candidates – to achieve the B grades required by the NMC or GMC in OET to register in the UK for OET and what kind of preparation course would suit them best.

How a candidate takes the OET Placement Test

For the Listening, Reading and Writing parts, candidates receive a login to the SLC’s online learning portal www.slc-campus.com. They then complete the papers online; they are timed. For the Speaking test, a candidate receives an invitation to schedule a Speaking Test, where they can book a time and day that suits them. They will need 15 minutes for the test. Before the test starts, they receive confirmation and full instructions. At the correct time, they login and meet their examiner in the online room.

Results are sent to candidates and, where appropriate, their employer. We are happy to discuss training options where requested.
