SLC Environmental Policy 2020
SLC is committed to reducing our environmental impact and continually improving our environmental performance as an integral part of our business strategy and operating methods, with regular review points.
We will involve staff in the implementation of this policy, for greater commitment and improved performance.
Online teaching
As a training organisation, we consciously decided to work online. We deliver thousands of hours of training using virtual classrooms. Teachers work from home and students take lessons from their home or their workplace. There is no travel to and from training centres, so saving thousands of unnecessary journeys using private or public transport.
Online courses and teaching materials
As a publisher of Medical English and test preparation courses, we decided to design, create and publish courses online, where they are taken by students. We offer paper versions only where online is not viable as a result of local internet infrastructure.
The materials we use in our tutored courses are primarily digital. Teachers use shareable documents and files, pdfs, and powerpoints together with the online courses we publish. Printed materials are only used where there are no alternatives.
Online meetings – internal and external
SLC internal team and management meetings are held online using web-conferencing software. This allows staff to work remotely and avoids unnecessary travel. Similarly, we encourage our clients to hold meetings with us online where possible and practical.
Office culture
SLC’s internal documents are digital wherever possible and hosted online. We print the minimum possible to run the business.
We encourage the recycling of waste wherever possible. Cups are reusable. We will seek to buy recycled and recyclable products. Cleaning materials used are as environmentally friendly as possible.
We offer flexible working, so team members can work from home where practical, so saving time and unnecessary journeys.
Travel
When SLC staff use cars to commute to work and travel by plane for business, we ensure the carbon footprint we create is offset via C Level, also based at the Sussex innovation Centre at the University of Sussex. All contributions go directly to award winning reforestation and conservation projects around the world.
Review and update
SLC undertakes to review and update this policy statement on an annual basis in consultation with staff and other stakeholders where necessary in order to promote good practice.
