Mastering Communication in Social Care

Mastering Communication in Social Care

This short CPD-accredited course is for overseas carers working in residential care homes, nursing homes, supported living and domiciliary care. It provides them with the English language skills that will enable them to communicate confidently, safely and effectively at work.

Mastering Communication in Social Care was developed in partnership with the South East Social Care Alliance and covers a wider range of common scenarios, from introductions to talking about food and drink, personal care, mobility, pain, pressure area care, falls and mental health.

The course is online and optimised for mobile devices. It is media-rich with video, audio, voice-recording and interactive tasks throughout. At the end of the course, learners receive a CPD certificate for 8 hours.

Mastering Communication in Social Care can be taken as a self-paced online course, combined with four online coaching sessions with an expert communication skills teacher, or practised through the Communication Roleplay Practice App. The app is included with both the self-paced course and the coaching package, and is also available on its own from £5 per month. In these sessions, learners practice the language through role play, problem solving and discussion. They receive input and feedback designed so they can use their learning with service users at work to provide care safely and confidently.

Now with AI roleplay practice

Mastering Communication in Social Care now comes with the Communication Roleplay Practice App. Learners practise the conversations from the course with an AI service user who responds in character. An AI tutor gives instant feedback on their English and shows them what to say instead.

Learners can repeat any scenario as many times as they want, on any phone, in their own time. There is no need to rehearse on a real service user first. The app covers the same real-world scenarios as the course: introductions, food and drink, personal care, mobility, pain, pressure area care, falls and mental health.

The app was built with funding from the Ufi VocTech Trust and tested with frontline carers and clinical experts. Carers rated it 4.28 out of 5, and every tester said they would recommend it to a colleague.
