Clinical communication skills training

Communicating successfully with patients and colleagues

Passing an international English test doesn’t guarantee that international healthcare professionals can communicate sensitively, appropriately and effectively with patients and colleagues.

These conversations range from complex, high stakes interactions to informal, idiomatic everyday ones. If not managed well, communication can break down, patient care negatively impacted, and the confidence of the healthcare professional lowered.

SLC offers bespoke training that offers cultural linguistic guidance and support designed to make a positive difference – not only to the healthcare professional, but also to their colleagues, their patients, and the patients’ families and carers.

Creating a training programme that meets your needs

Training programmes are designed following rigorous needs analysis with both employers and participants. They have clearly articulated outcomes with the inbuilt flexibility to adapt to emerging needs as the training evolves.

The sessions combine linguistic cultural awareness with input and feedback on language and communication skills. Sessions may include role play, problem solving, cross-cultural work, and sessions on specific challenges such as local slang, idiomatic language and accent comprehension.

Programmes are tailored to different professions across healthcare, reflecting the conversations they have in practice. They can be for individuals or groups of up to 12 attendees.

Sessions take place on Zoom on a schedule built around participant availability. Most sessions last between one and two hours. Half-day and full-day workshops can be arranged on request, including with in-person delivery.
