International Healthcare Recruitment

SLC works with thousands of healthcare professionals, along with healthcare employers, educators and recruitment company. Many of our learners are preparing for OET or IELTS so they can work in an English-speaking country such as the UK, US, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand.

These documents are issued by government and regulatory bodies to define their approach to international recruitment of health and social care professionals. This is not an exhaustive list and will be added to over time. If there is anything you’re specifically looking for, get in touch.

This WHO User’s Guide is a companion to the Code. It is designed to provide an overview of the Code and to help readers understand its content. It explains the context in which it has been developed and highlights its main messages.

The World Health Organisation’s Code is designed to establish and promote voluntary principles and practices for the ethical international recruitment of health personnel and to facilitate the strengthening of health systems around the world.

Updated in February 2020, NHS Employers’ language Competency Guidance outlines the importance of assessing the English language levels of international healthcare professionals provides a good practice guidance for employers.

Published in June 2020, NHS Employers’ international recruitment toolkit is designed to support NHS staff who are leading and delivering international recruitment.

The NHS Long Term Plan focuses on what needs to happen for the service to meet both current and future health and social care needs. International recruitment is an integral part of addressing staff shortages.

The UK government’s Code of Practice was updated in February 2021. In particular it details the countries UK employers and recruitment companies can actively recruit from, as well as how international recruitment fits into global healthcare provision.
