Passing an exam can change lives. It can open up educational opportunities, enable professional registration and meet visa requirements such as indefinite leave to remain (ILR), Health and Care Worker and Skilled Worker visas.
SLC works with strategic migration partnerships, local governments, refugee resettlement teams and refugee support organisations to provide tailored, effective IELTS, OET and SELT (Secure English Language Test) exam preparation courses to groups of refugees and migrants.
IELTS is perhaps the world’s most well-known international English exam, recognised by all Higher Education institutions and Further Education colleges in the UK and by professional regulators such as the GMC, NMC and Social Work England.
IELTS is a Secure English Language Test (SELT) recognised by the UK government for visa purposes, including for work, study and indefinite leave to remain.

OET is the world’s most widely recognised test of English for Healthcare. It is used by healthcare regulators in the UK – the GMC, NMC, GDC, HCPC and GPhC – to assess whether an internationally trained doctor, nurse, dentist, allied health professional and pharmacist has the right level of English to provide safe and effective care.

To apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain, you must achieve a B1 score in one of the following Secure English Language Tests recognised by the government:

In 2023 and 2024, we prepared 60 refugee nurses based in hospitals around England for OET Nursing. 39 are now registered and working in the NHS and others are working towards achieving this goal.
We have worked with 37 refugee doctors on the LRDP programme. 26 have passed OET Medicine, 15 of whom now working as doctors in the NHS and 9 are taking PLAB training.
