What is Medical Writing?
According to American Medical Writers Association, (AMWA), there are different types of medical writing:
• Regulatory writing, e.g. protocols for clinical trials, clinical study reports (CSRs), investigator brochures and post-approval documents
• Educational writing, e.g. websites, articles and blogs about devices and drugs, often for a professional audience
• Health communication, e.g. patient information, public health communication, website copy and health news
• Promotional writing, e.g. marketing brochures, leaflets, and landing pages to promote diagnostic or therapeutic products
• Grant writing, e.g. for companies to secure grants for research funding
While the style of writing will vary from one context to another, a medical writer provides medically accurate information and builds trust and authority on behalf of health and medical companies and brands.
Some things to consider when writing
• Opening. Do you have an opening sentence or two that grabs your audience and makes them want to read the rest of your article? Is the significance of your topic clear?
• Structure and flow. Does your writing flow? Is the structure clear? What’s the journey like for your readers?
• Clarity. How clear are your terms? And how ambiguous..? Accurate, precise language ensures your audience understand you clearly.
• Conciseness. How concise is your writing? Your text needs to be tightly written to maintain audience engagement. Too many words and the temptation to distraction grows.
• Conclusion. How compelling is your conclusion? What are your readers coming away with? What is your call to thought or, indeed, action?
