Check out the SLC Presentations at the English for Healthcare Conference
What a privilege it was to sponsor and co-organise the English for Healthcare conference this past weekend.
SLC people gave 3 presentations over the two days. We’re delighted to share them with you here.
1. Chris Moore, Managing Director
Learning the Lessons: Analysing the Creation of a Sustainable, Structured Nursing English Programme in Multiple Nursing Colleges across India
This presentation analysed the development of Nurs-Eng, an English language programme for nurses, delivered to Degree and Diploma level students at nursing colleges across India. The programme was created through SLC’s partnership with EbekMed (part of Ebek), who identified the need for Indian nurses to achieve better levels of professional English for both work and study.
Nurs-Eng consists of standardised 3- and 4-year courses with progress assessed by Cambridge Upskill and OET Pulse. Ebekmed provides face-to-face tuition and SLC provides the curriculum and course materials – all digital and downloadable, so they can be done on any device in any setting.
The presentation looked at why and how the programme was created, the challenges overcome, and what progress students made over the first two years of its delivery.

2. Virginia Allum, Head of Medical English
AI Video Creation – Not a Complete Solution… Yet
Virginia creates outstanding online Medical English content, used by doctors, nurses, carers and OET students around the world to improve their professional English and communication skills and achieve the scores they need in OET to work in English-speaking countries.
Over the years, Virginia has created hundreds of animated videos as part of her course creation work. As AI has rapidly developed, she can now accelerate the creation of new content and integrate a much greater variety of image, sound and voice. However, AI is not the panacea some declare it to be – at least not yet.
In this presentation, Virginia describes how AI is impacting video creation, gives examples of what it can do, and describes the related challenges, so giving audience members a clear idea of what they can also do.

3. Jo Langford, Academic Lead
How to Create a Successful Video Tutorial
SLC Academic Lead, Jo, is a brilliant video maker. Her videos on OET Preparation have achieved over 3 million views and SLC’s OET channel has over 83,000 subscribers. We’ve lost count of the number of times we have been told that people passed their OET test thanks to her videos or teachers saying how useful the videos are for their students.
In her presentation, Jo shares some of what she has learned over 5 years of posting content for OET learners. The ideas she explores can be applied by any OET Preparation or English for Healthcare teacher looking to add to their courses or reach a wider audience.
Jo looks at how content, visuals, activities, and timing can engage learners and promote participation. She also introduces a few marketing tricks and tips to show ways teachers can boost their online presence, grow their audience, promote their knowledge and skills, and stand out from what has become a very crowded space.
