New Unit on Mental Health in SLC’s English for Nurses course

Subscribers to SLC’s English for Nurses course will find a new unit focusing on Mental Health next time they log in to their courses.

The growing need for mental health care has been well documented over recent years. According to the World Health Organisation, in 2019, 1 in every 8 people, or 970 million people around the world were living with a mental disorder, with anxiety and depressive disorders the most common. In 2020, the number of people living with anxiety and depressive disorders rose significantly because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Initial estimates show a 26% and 28% increase respectively for anxiety and major depressive disorders in just one year.[1]

Clearly, mental health issues affect not only many of the patients that nurses care for every day, but also their families and wider communities.

Anxiety and Depression

While working with patients with a variety of mental health care needs has been integrated across a number of units in the existing English for Nurses course, we have now added a unit that specifically focuses on this vital area of healthcare. There are seven sections in the unit:

  • The brain
  • Mental health conditions overview
  • Depression
  • Psychoses
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Acute confusion
  • Mental health and young people

Each section introduces key vocabulary to use when working with patients including symptoms, conditions, assessment, and treatments. There are dialogues throughout between nurses and patients.

We believe this is an essential update to the course and is part of our ongoing commitment to making sure that our courses fully reflect current demands and issues in global healthcare.
