There are 3 parts to the Reading paper.
In Part A you read 4 texts on a common topic in 15 minutes, such as leaflets, tables, instructions and explanations, and answer 20 questions. The time goes very quickly and there is no time to read all the texts. Instead you have just enough time to scan them and find the information or vocabulary required. This requires strong techniques, plenty of practice and a cool head.
In Part B, candidates read 6 short workplace texts, such as an extract from a leaflet, guidelines, an email or a manual, and answer a multiple-choice question on each one. The topics should be familiar to healthcare professionals, but again it’s important to know what to expect before entering the test centre.
Part C is perhaps the most difficult for many candidates. There are 2 longer texts of 700-800 words, often with a relatively academic focus, for example new research, a health issue, or a patient initiative, with 7 questions on each text. The language is advanced – complex sentences, lots of references, academic/formal vocabulary – and time is tight at 15-20 minutes per text in practice.
Reach OET B was written by a team of accredited OET Trainers under the guidance of Virginia Allum.
Virginia wrote SLC’s Medical English courses and is SLC’s Head of Medical English. She writes for OET, is a lecturer in English for Medical Purposes, a Medical English teacher trainer, and a widely published writer. Virginia co-authored the Cambridge OET Preparation book and the Cambridge English for Nursing text books, used by Medical universities around the world.
