SLC expands into Uzbekistan
Partnerships · International
SLC director Peter Rodway recently spent a week in Uzbekistan, meeting university leaders, lecturers and students to explore opportunities for Medical English and English-medium instruction (EMI). The visit marks the start of SLC’s work with healthcare education institutions in the country.
Uzbekistan’s healthcare education sector is growing fast, and English is at the centre of it.
With institutions investing in new facilities and English-taught degree programmes, Peter found strong demand for professional English and for digital learning materials that can be adapted to local needs.
What the visit showed
- Investment in healthcare education — new facilities and English-taught degree programmes are being introduced
- Demand for professional English — for students and staff working in English-medium settings
- Need for adaptable digital materials — resources that fit different programmes and teaching contexts
A highlight of the trip was Peter’s visit to Tashkent Pharmaceutical Institute, supported by Uktam Rustamov and the team at MEROS Corp.
From the visit
“The students’ questions and willingness to get stuck in and speak English were exactly what makes this kind of visit worthwhile.” — Peter Rodway, Director, SLC
SLC looks forward to developing collaborations with MEROS and the Institute to support Uzbekistan’s ambitions for healthcare education.
