General English for ESOL summer courses – freelance teacher

Specialist Language Courses (SLC) provides tailored digital English language training to a broad international student body.  

 

SLC delivers live online instructor-led courses using virtual classrooms. Courses are taught by highly qualified and experienced teachers to groups of up to ten students at any time. A significant part of SLC’s training focuses on preparing refugee and migrant communities to work and study in the UK. These courses include providing vocational language training and preparing students to pass regulatory English language tests such as IELTS and OET. 

Roles and responsibilities  

  1. Teaching group classes online 
  2. Lesson preparation 
  3. Following course plan 
  4. Lesson record-keeping 
  5. Marking of learners’ written work 
  6. Marking progress tests & providing individual feedback to students and SLC 
  7. Supplying progress reports to SLC as agreed 
  8. Responding appropriately to any student feedback gathered by SLC 

 

Qualifications and experience 

 

Essential  

  • Minimum CELTA or equivalent, DELTA (and equivalent) qualified candidates preferred.  
  • At least 5 years teaching experience  
  • Experience of teaching General English to adults  
  • Experience teaching A1 – B1 levels 
  • Online teaching experience  
  • Good communication and time management skills  
  • Strong IT skills 

 

Preferred  

Experience of teaching refugees  

 

About the course and learners  

  • Each course is 10 weeks. The course consists of tutor-led tuition, taught online to groups of no more than 10 learners.  
  • Courses are either 8 hours per week (4 * 2-hour classes) or 4 hours per week (2 * 2-hour classes) in the morning, afternoon or evening. 
  • Start date is beginning of July. 
  • Learners are adult refugees who have recently resettled in the UK.  
  • Courses start at the beginning of July. The class schedule is set at the beginning of the course. 
  • The learners are aiming to improve their English level language needed to apply for study or work after the course has finished.  
  • In addition to lessons, learners are expected to complete up to 10 hours of self-study per week, this includes homework and self-study using an online learning platform specified by SLC.  
  • Video lessons are given in an online meeting room, using Zoom meeting software.  
  • The lesson schedule is agreed in a separate document with each teacher. SLC and SLC’s client will do their best to ensure continuity of class composition and attendance.  

 

For all courses  

As part of all courses, tutors need to ensure they have a laptop/PC/computer, headset, that they have practised using the meeting room and its relevant features, and that they can help learners who have problems using the meeting room. SLC support all tutors in this. 

 

Pay 

£22 – £25 per hour to include any associated preparation and marking, depending on qualifications and experience.
