Remember that you do most of the speaking in the exam. The other person can only say what is on their part of the role play card.
Get familiar with how the exam works. You’re tested on specifics, not on general English fluency. So don’t memorise an answer – it won’t help you. You need to practise your spoken language skills, plus grammar and vocabulary.
But you also need to show that you can build communicate effectively. That means asking the right type of questions to patients, showing empathy, and building a relationship.
Our OET expert Jo has a lot of free videos on preparing for the OET speaking sub-test. Start with this one on how to approach the test.
Practise with a friend or tutor to help you prepare. You can find some free OET speaking sample tests on the OET website. Pick the one for your profession.
Want to watch a live role-play of the OET speaking test? Check out our YouTube video with Jo and OET student and SLC’s OET Hero, Femi. Stay tuned for feedback on Femi’s performance at the end.
The OET speaking sub-test is about 20 minutes long in total. There are two role plays – both are specific to your healthcare profession. You have three minutes to prepare for each one, and the role plays themselves are about five minutes long.
In your three minute preparation time, decide on the type of language you need to use. Make notes on the role play card. Notice the verbs in the task, and how you will use this in your questions and information.
Not with only these 3 tips! To reach grade B in your OET speaking test, you need some expert help.
We at SLC are leaders in getting doctors and nurses to a B in their OET. If you need help with the speaking test alone, we have a specialist OET speaking course for you. You can choose self-study, or get one-to-one help from our highly trained tutors.
