Preparing for the OET on Computer requires a combination of strong language skills, confidence with the digital interface, and awareness of the test-day environment. Many successful candidates say that the key is practice—both with OET materials and with typing under pressure. This guide brings together the most helpful insights shared by learners so you can feel fully prepared on exam day.
Completing the official OET sample computer tests is essential so that you are familiar with the format. Aim to complete:
This helps you become familiar with the format, timing, and style of questions. Many candidates report that Reading texts feel longer during the real exam, so practising time management is essential.
Listening
You need sustained concentration. Even a brief loss of focus can cause you to miss key details. Practise listening without pausing and build endurance.
Reading
Regular practice with OET-style texts is the most effective strategy. The more familiar you are with the structure, the more confidently you’ll manage the timing.
Writing
Practice typing your letters. Use official OET case notes. Practise planning quickly before typing.
Speaking
Aim for natural fluency. Speak as if you’re communicating with a patient rather than taking an exam. Follow the role-play card closely and complete as many tasks as possible, but don’t worry if you don’t finish them all.
Some candidates find the test-day rules surprising. Here’s what to expect:
Understanding these conditions in advance helps reduce stress and makes the exam feel more predictable.
Typing speed and accuracy directly affect your Writing score. Practise timed writing tasks so you can write confidently under pressure.
A note many candidates don’t realise:
➡️ It’s okay to exceed 200 words.
Your letter can be slightly longer as long as the content is accurate, relevant, and well structured.
The OET on Computer can feel intense, especially when switching between tasks. Staying calm is essential, particularly during Listening and Speaking.
Remember:
With the right mindset, you’ll perform far better across all parts of the exam.
The full test takes approximately three hours, with each sub-test completed on a computer except for Speaking, which is scheduled separately.
Yes. For many candidates, Speaking is delivered at home via Zoom, usually on a different day from the venue-based test. We recommend checking with your chosen test centre.
They provide essential practice. Combine them with additional reading, listening, typing, and writing exercises for the best results.
Not harder — but it feels different. Typing, on-screen navigation, and digital tools require practice.
With consistent practice, strong familiarity with the OET digital format, and calm focus on test day, the OET on Computer is completely manageable. Build your confidence early and you’ll feel ready to succeed.
