How to Pass OET with a High Score: Practical Strategies for Healthcare Professionals

How to pass OET

Preparing for the OET exam can feel overwhelming, but with the right approach, you can achieve the high score you need to progress in your healthcare career.

In this guide, we’ll outline what you need to do before and during your OET preparation, including understanding the format, improving your English, using reliable resources, and creating an effective study plan.

For a more interactive overview, watch our accompanying video where we discuss these topics in further detail.

Understand the OET format

  • Know the Exam Structure: Learn how the Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking sections are organized.
  • Familiarize Yourself with Strategies: Identify which skills and techniques are most useful for each section.
  • Know What to Expect: Understand the question types and task requirements so there are no surprises on test day.

Evaluate your English level

To score a Grade B (C1 level) on the OET, your English must be at an advanced level. If your level is:

  • B2 or Higher: You can start studying with OET materials and other healthcare-focused resources.
  • B1 or Lower: Focus on improving your general English first (grammar, vocabulary, and communication) before tackling OET-specific materials.

Attempting the OET too soon—with a lower level—can be expensive and discouraging if you don’t pass.

Use reliable resources

  • Trusted Providers: Look for materials from reputable organizations such as SLC.
  • Beware of “Too Good to Be True” Offers: Hundreds of practice tests at a minimal fee might not be accurate or high quality.
  • No Official Vocabulary List: Memorizing random word lists won’t help. Instead, build a wide range of practical medical and general English vocabulary.

Make a study plan

  • Prioritize Your Weaknesses: Identify areas you find challenging and devote more time to them.
  • Use Your Time Effectively: Set clear goals and deadlines for each skill (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking).
  • Combine Practice Papers & Skills Work: Don’t limit yourself to past tests; also develop grammar, vocabulary, and overall language proficiency.
