How to work as a foreign doctor in Australia. A complete guide to what to do

Australian Doctor

Are you a foreign medical professional who’d like to work in Australia (or Oz, as it’s known)?

Do you want to know the process for getting a job Down Under?

Then follow SLC’s step-by-step process for overseas doctors who plan to move to Australia.

What is the pathway for foreign doctors in Australia?

There is a clear procedure to follow if you want to get a job as an international doctor in Australia.

Check out the steps down below:

1. Have a recognised medical degree

Your school or university must be listed by the Australian Medical Council, and the World Directory of Medical Schools.

2. Receive a job offer

You can’t apply for registration until you have an offer of work.

This could be as a specialist, non-specialist, or doctor-in-training.

You can look for work on the jobs board of the Medical Journal of Australia. (If you wish to work as a GP in Australia, this post will give you more detailed information)

3. Have a medical skills assessment

When you register as a doctor in Australia, the Australian Medical Council will assess your skills.

There are different pathways, depending on whether you have a specialism or not.

If you are on the standard pathway, you will probably have to take two exams to test your abilities.

You can find more details on this page of the AMC’s website.

4. Prove your English language skills

As well your medical skills, your English language proficiency will be checked. If English is not your first language, you will need to have:

IELTS Band 7

Or

OET Grade B

Or

PTE Academic with a score of 65

Or

TOEFL iBT with a score of 94

This government website gives you more information about the English skills you need.

5. Apply for a visa

Once you have collected all the above, you can apply for a visa. Visit the information page from the Australian government’s Department of Health to find out more.

SLC are the experts at helping you reach IELTS Band 7 or OET Grade B if you’re a medical professional. Ask us about anything you need.
