Small talk: Use questions for better connections

In English, you can use questions to make polite conversation. In Medical English, or if you’re studying for the OET speaking test, these types of questions are useful to show your fluency. Over the next four weeks you’ll learn some ways that you can use them.

One way to use questions is by making small talk – which means exchanging words on a non-serious topic. Small talk can help you in a healthcare situation: if you can create a connection between you and your patient, they will feel more at ease.

Use the questions below from the moment you greet your patient.

1. Did you find your way here OK?

As a newcomer, it’s easy to get lost in a big hospital, with all the corridors and floors. If it’s an initial appointment in a large building, ask this question to show that you understand how bewildered your patient might feel. (Showing empathy is a key part of the OET speaking sub-test).

2. Is it still raining/sunny out there?

It’s a cliché, but it’s true, that British people love talking about the weather. While you’ve been at work, the weather outside may have turned from heavy rain to bright sunshine (and back again). If you’re ever stuck for small talk, weather is a winner.

3. Have you had to wait a long time?

This is another question that shows empathy. Previous appointments overrun, or there aren’t enough staff on duty. There are many other reasons that mean patients often wait a long time to see you. Acknowledge this, as it shows your empathy with how frustrating that might be.

One note of caution: your time is limited. Therefore, you won’t want to spend time listening to a long anecdote that isn’t relevant to the consultation. Make sure your questions have either yes/no answers, or a limited response of range.
